Maxwell Fraser, also known as Maxi Jazz, passed away “peacefully in his sleep” on Friday night. The main singer of the British dance band Faithless has received praise from the music community, with one British DJ praising him as having “an extraordinary skill.”
The musician and DJ was a key player in the band Faithless, well known for the club hit Insomnia.
Armin van Buuren, a legend of Dutch trance, believes Jazz’s music continues to “inspire others.”
Since Jazz’s passing was reported, numerous facets of the music business have continued to pay respect to him.
The 65-year-old was described as playing a “pivotal role in the realm of British electronica” by independent record label Rough Trade Records.
Jazz was praised by British DJ Judge Jules as having “amazing skill” and being “a complete gentleman,” and Jazz’s “words and performances impacted so many of us,” according to DJ and radio host Mistajam.
In 2012, Jazz, a devoted supporter of Crystal Palace Football Club, was appointed an associate director.
The Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Fulham on Boxing Day at Selhurst Park will feature the first team walking out to Faithless, the club’s chairman said on Twitter.
“Desperately sad to get the news that we lost Maxi this morning,” continued Steve Parish. He was a fantastic individual with a lot of talent who supported the team wholeheartedly in all ways.
“He made the world dance, sing, and laugh, and I had the honor of calling him a friend. Sadly, Maxi.
Jazz, who was born in Brixton, south London, fronted the band Soul Food Cafe and Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys, and he also performed solo.
Faithless, according to DJ David Pearce, “affected so many lives” and became an “iconic force in UK dance music” by the middle of the 1990s. Jazz, in his words, was “the poet of dance music” and had a “warm, cool, sympathetic soul.”
The stadium dance band Faithless was a pioneer when it was founded in 1995. They performed on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury in 2002, one of the biggest festivals in the world. In 1999 and 2002, they received a nomination for Best UK Dance Act at the Brit Awards.
A new studio album was released by the band over ten years after their 2011 breakup, during the Covid epidemic. Jazz, who had started another band called Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys, chose not to join them.
In 2013, while Faithless was on sabbatical, Jazz started writing the music for the guitar band, which gave the band a fresh sound.
The band referred to their music as “melodic funk and blues combined with reggae beats, dub baselines, and Jamaican melodies” on their website.
