Sydney, who was born on August 7, 1999, was heavily impacted by her athletic parents, who drew notice as runners in high school and college.

The Olympic gold medalist’s mother, Manhattan College alumna Mary Neumeister McLaughlin, was a high school runner. She had great talent as a 400m and 800m runner, but because the track was not available for ladies at her college, she had no choice but to give up.

Willie McLaughlin, Sydney’s father, was also a terrific runner who was an All-American at Manhattan College. He even made the semifinals of the US Olympic 400m Trials.

Sydney’s parents attended the same college and have four children: Morgan, Tylor, Ryan, and Sydney. Her parents did introduce all of their children to tracks at a young age, but they never forced anyone to choose a sport.

However, all of them eventually developed an interest in sports. When discussing the kids with NJ, Sydney’s father stated,

“They all participated in other sports such as soccer and basketball. But we knew they’d end up on the track.”

He also mentioned that he started his kids on the track when they were eight years old. As his daughter Morgan advanced on the track, Sydney and Tylor progressively joined her to use their track skills.

While all of the McLaughlin children have an athletic spark, Taylor and Sydney stand out the most in terms of their achievements.

Aside from Sydney, her brother Tylor is a well-known runner who won silver in the 400m hurdles at the IAAF World U20 Championships in 2016.

Sydney’s sister Morgan was a terrific runner at Peter’s University, and the Olympic gold medalist’s brother Rayn is also a talented runner.

While each McLaughlin is thriving in their various disciplines at their speed, the pressure to do the best appears to be especially heavy on Sydney’s shoulders.

Sydney feels pressured because of people’s high expectations of her as she approaches a more critical milestone. Her parents, on the other hand, are present to ensure that she is comfortable with anything she performs on the track to the best of her abilities. Sydney’s father commented on this, saying,

We wanted to make sure they weren’t placing themselves under too much stress. We are quite proud of them.

Similarly, Sydney expressed her thoughts on the subject, saying,

“People expect you to set records and raise the bar. But I’m just trying to do my best, not worry about what other people are doing, and just have fun.”
