Dejounte Murray’s parents, Meka and John Murray were never there while the NBA player grew up. The Atlanta Hawks player came from a broken household. At the age of five, most youngsters become more socially engaged and communicative. Murray did, however, understand what a narcotic was at the time.
He had discovered that the majority of his family members were gang members who engaged in criminal behavior. He could recognize drug addicts and traffickers. Murray told Sports Illustrated that he had heard rumors about his great-grandmother being in a gang.
His mother joined a gang and served time in and out of jail. One strong bond and a growing one with his parents. Dejounte and Meka, a mother and son, would move from one house to another. When Murray got arrested for the first time in middle school, he and his mother were taken from public housing.
Murray sent an emotional message to his mother in 2019, applauding her for honoring her commitment. Murray wrote that his mother had returned from jail and promised him she would never go back. Meka did it. She encouraged her kid and watched him develop into one of the top basketball players in the country.
Murray had a tight relationship with his stepfather, whom he nicknamed Heavy Chevy. Murray paid a poignant homage to his stepfather, who died in 2020. Murray and his father, John, did not have a great relationship. Murray confesses that while he was not a deadbeat, he was not a father who would care for his children.
But those days are long gone. Instead of carrying on the family legacy, Murray lowered his head and began surrounding himself with the right people. In recent years, his connection with his father has also greatly improved.
Murray bought his father an SUV for Father’s Day last year and shared a video of it on Instagram. The Hawks player stated in the caption that he hoped to reunite with his father before it was too late. He also stated that his father acknowledged his absence from Murray’s life as a child.

Dejounte Murray, a 2022 NBA All-Star, and his two partners have welcomed two beautiful children. The basketball star is supposed to have married Jania Meshell, although the date is unknown. Dejounte had a newborn daughter with his previous girlfriend before beginning to date Jania in 2020.
His former partner’s identity remains unknown. Riley, Murray’s elder kid, has already attended several basketball games with her father. Earlier this year, Dejounte wrote his daughter a sweet birthday message. He gathered his daughter and the rest of the family to commemorate the important occasion.
Dejounte has always stated that he wants his children to have a better upbringing than himself. On April 9, 2023, Dejounte had his second daughter, Icelynn Mercedes Murray. Icelynn is the second child of Dejountey and Jania. Jania has a son, Kacey, with NBA Youngboy, an American rapper.
In 2022, NBA Youngboy had a conflict with Murray concerning the basketball player’s child care. Jania cleared the air, saying Dejounte had never mistreated Kacey. The family photos show Dejounte doing his best to integrate their family, and Kacey is also a significant member of the Murray household.
