His father, Matty McNeil, was a productive striker in professional football. He is from Manchester, and up to the age of 20, he competed in local competitions like the Middleton Sunday leagues and the Rochdale Saturday leagues to display his football prowess.

In the second leg of the 2005–06 Northern Final against Carlisle United, Matty made his professional debut and made a lasting impression by scoring and winning man of the match.

Despite Macclesfield’s extra-time loss due to away goals, his performance showed his promise. After leaving Southport the previous month, Matty joined Chester in June 2011.

When Matty injured his knee in his first preseason game against Tranmere, his career came to an abrupt end. He was unwell for the remainder of the preseason but amazingly recovered in time to score in his debut.

Dwight McNeil did, however, miss the last 10 games due to a knee injury. He received the Supporters Player of the Year and Managers Player of the Year honors despite this setback.
