George Matthew Karlaftis plays defensive end in the National Football League (NFL) for the Kansas City Chiefs. He attended West Lafayette High School and won the state shot put championships back-to-back. George Karlaftis started every game in his debut season at Purdue, totaling 54 tackles and 7.5 sacks.

He was later selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Karlaftis became a regular starter and contributed to the Kansas City Chiefs winning Super Bowl LVII.

2020 saw West Lafayette post an 8-2 record, including a perfect 4-0 record in the Hoosier-West Conference, thanks in large part to his contributions. He was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 16 outside linebacker and No. 3 overall recruit in Indiana while he was attending West Lafayette.

He was ranked as the No. 2 prospect in Indiana, the No. 26 outside linebacker, and the No. 24 player in the region by ESPN. In nine games as a redshirt freshman in 2022, Yanni demonstrated his defensive prowess and contributed to special teams. Yanni recorded four tackles in all, including two solo attempts, to show his impact on the field.

On April 3, 2001, George Karlaftis was born in Athens, Greece, to Matthew and Amy Weida Karlaftis. Known by his nickname, Matt, Matthew Karlaftis started as a javelin thrower for the University of Miami track and field team. During his first practice after joining Miami’s football team, he had a severe head injury that required surgery.

He is currently a professor at the National Technical University of Athens and has a PhD in civil engineering as a result. In addition, he holds the record for the longest javelin throw at the University of Miami and has received honors like a Fulbright Scholarship. Amy Weida Karlaftis, George’s mother, is a competitive athlete in her field.

While attending West Lafayette High School, she excelled in three different sports and graduated as the school’s all-time top scorer in girls’ basketball. Amy played volleyball at the co-rec as part of her Purdue athletics experience, where she met Matt and started their illustrious romance.

In 2014, Matt Karlaftis suffered a heart attack and passed away, leaving his family devastated. The family decided to go back to West Lafayette, Indiana, after Amy left to handle the challenges of raising four small children.
