On August 23, 1971, in Lansing, Michigan, Sherry Whitmer, the mother, and Richard Whitmer, the father, welcomed Gretchen into the world.
Governor William Milliken employed her father, Richard, as the head of the state Department of Commerce. Between 1988 and 2006, he led Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan as its president and CEO. He is a Republican.
Aside from that, Sherry, her mother, worked for Michigan Attorney General Frank J. Kelley as an associate attorney general.
Sherry and Richard reportedly got divorced a long time ago, when Gretchen was only ten years old. After that, their mother relocated to Grand Rapids with Gretchen and her siblings.
