After months of anticipation, The Duttons have finally taken over our screens. The fifth (super-sized) season of Yellowstone is almost halfway through, and the brand-new prequel series 1923 will debut on December 18.
When you add the individuals from the preceding prequel, 1883, to the Duttons, it becomes a lot of people to keep in mind.
The family grandfather from 1883 was a farmer from Tennessee named James (Tim McGraw). In 1883, James made the decision to go to the West with his family. He was still troubled by the Civil War, where he had fought for the Confederacy at the Battle of Antietam and been captured.

James and Margaret Dutton’s son John Dutton was only a little boy when his family first settled in Montana on what would eventually become the Yellowstone Dutton ranch.
Alongside his uncle, Jacob Dutton, he worked as a grownup on the family farm while also starting a family with his wife, Emma, and son, Jack. John Dutton Jr., who would father John Dutton III, the creator of Yellowstone, is also believed to be sprung from John Sr.
Who is Elsa Dutton, the daughter of James Dutton?
Spirited Elsa (Isabel May), a child of James and Margaret Dutton, served as the story’s narrator in 1883.
Elsa was a passionate and dedicated cowgirl, a superb horseback rider, much to her mother’s dismay. At the age of 17, she and her family joined a wagon train in pursuit of a new beginning in the West.
Along the road, she met a cowboy called Ennis. The two fell in love and decided to be married before Ennis was murdered by some bandits. After saving Elsa’s life on the journey, Sam, a Comanche warrior, starts dating her.
Even though they both accepted that she was his wife, Sam felt he could not leave his lands and his people and Elsa promised to come back to him once her family had reached their destination and found a farm.
But shortly later, during a retaliation assault on the wagon train, Elsa was struck by an arrow and suffered injuries that ultimately led to her death. James relocated the remainder of their family to Montana, where Elsa passed away.

Margaret (Faith Hill), the self-assured and stubborn wife of James Dutton, was the head of the Dutton family in 1883.
As a strong Leader and passionately protective mother, she headed off on the trek westward with James and their family, only to settle on a farm in Montana following the death of their daughter Elsa.
A wagon train led by James and included his wife Margaret, their children Elsa and John, his sister Claire, and Claire’s daughter Mary Abel departed from Fort Worth, Texas, but the journey was tainted by tragedy.
