According to Mori leaders, Titewhai Harawira was steadfast in her pursuit of justice for the Mori, and her absence at Waitangi this year would be felt.
Titewhai often accompanied prime ministers to the neighborhood marae, making him a well-known figure during Waitangi Day festivities. Being the proud grandmother of a close-knit family, she actively participated in Mor activities and had a steely determination.
She was a tenacious, persistent candidate with a few divisive opinions, according to former New Zealand First MP Shane Jones, and a critic of her people.

A longtime campaigner from New Zealand named Titewhai Harawira passed away on January 24, 2023, at the age of 90. He had been suffering from serious health issues.
She will lay in state at her Avondale home for a night before traveling to Hoani Waititi Marae in Henderson, according to Harawira’s son, former MP Hone Harawira. To be buried, she would go back to the north.
Titewhai Harawira’s “feisty, staunch activism” and ardent dedication to furthering te ao Mori ambitions were lauded by Marama Davidson, co-leader of the Green Party.

Iti promised to go to Hoani Waititi Marae and get ready for her tangi. The chairman of the Waitangi National Trust Board, Pita Tipene (Ngti Hine), expressed astonishment at Harawira’s passing. Although he didn’t know her well, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins stated he wished to grieve her passing.

After completing her nursing training, Titewhai Te Hoia married John Harawira in 1952 and made her home in Avondale, Auckland. They have nine biological kids and three adoptive kids.
The pair was active in the community and helped create the Hoani Waititi urban marae in West Auckland. Titewhai Harawira also participated in the Mori Women’s Welfare League’s campaigns, notably the one to enhance Maori housing.
After John Harawira passed away in 1977, she was left to care for their large family on her alone.
She joined the anti-government Ng Tamatoa organization in the early 1970s and put up a valiant fight for the Mori language, often in the face of severe criticism.

Titewhai Te Hoia Hinewhare was nurtured by her family after being born in Whakapara, Northland, in 1932.
She had observed the alienation of Maori land while growing up during WWII, which planted the roots for her devotion to land rights.

In subsequent years, she became best recognized outside of her social circles for her yearly demonstrations at Waitangi. In 1998, she prevented Helen Clark, the then-leader of the Labour Party, from speaking at the marae, causing the usually tough Clark to break down in tears.
According to Harawira, she is fighting for the equal rights of Mori women who are silenced.
