Melanie Jayne Chisholm was born on January 12, 1974, in Whiston, Lancashire. She is the only child of Alan Chisholm, a fitter at the Otis Elevator Company, and Joan O’Neill, a secretary and personal assistant who has been singing in bands since she was 14 years old.
When Chisholm was four years old, her parents split after getting married in 1971. Chisholm’s mother had additional children when she was six years old through a second marriage, including racing driver Paul O’Neill.
She was raised in Widnes, Cheshire, and attended Brookvale Junior School and Fairfield High School in the Runcorn area.
