Machine Gun Kelly known as MGK Once again, has angered metalheads. This week on The Howard Stern Show, the rapper-turned-pop-punk singer sang his own interpretation of System of a Down’s “Aerials.” Much to the singer’s dismay, Netizens were not impressed with her performance. Machine Gun justifies their decision to cover the band.
According to Kelly, the metal band “blew [his] mind every night.” Prior to this, the vocalist participated in a European festival tour with the band. Before commencing the cover of the song, he stated:
“I’m here simply to jam and see what transpires.” Serj’s [Tankian] voice is beyond description. “I’m simply here to jam and enjoy myself.”
Despite the acclaim for his backing band, the Bloody Valentine vocalist appeared to be straining on the first note of Aerials. Shavo Odadjian, bassist for SOAD, was attracted to the cover.
He posted the video to Instagram and requested his followers for feedback on MGK’s rendition. The newly-minted rock vocalist was maligned in the comment section.
Daron Malakian, the band’s guitarist and vocalist, also posted the performance to his Instagram account with a subtle comment expressing his appreciation for the effort to cover the song.
The internet reacts to Machine Gun Kelly’s cover of Aerials
The official YouTube page for The Howard Stern Show featured MGK’s cover on their channel. The 31-year-old artist was criticized in the video’s accompanying comments.
Numerous SOAD fans demanded that the band return from its lengthy hiatus and produce new music. Netizens mocked MGK’s attempt to cover the song, stating that he “ruined” it.
His most current tour begins in June of this year, and Madison Square Garden is already sold out. Additionally, the singer said in the podcast episode that he spent time with Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins just two days before his death.
MGK and the band were supposed to perform at the music festival in Asunciónico, Paraguay. The event was, however, postponed due to poor weather.
“I stepped up, and all 20 of us [in my crew] walked out of the elevator, along with Taylor, Dave, and the entire Foo Fighters staff, but Taylor went around to each and every one of us and gave us his time.” Each and every one of us, including my assistant. Oh, I’m from Topanga, she responds to the question. Dude, you have an incredible spirit.”
Machine Gun received a response from SOAD fans prior to receiving criticism. When Kelly engaged in a public fight with Slipknot’s vocalist, Corey Taylor, Slipknot fans targeted him as well.
MGK described Taylor on Cutter’s RockCast as an artist who “failed in one genre and tried to become rock.”
