Since 2015, she has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, having defeated Douglas Alexander, the shadow foreign minister for the Labour Party. 2019 and 2017 saw the politician run again for office.

She became the youngest member of parliament (MP) since the Reform Act of 1832 when she was elected to the House of Commons in May 2015 at the age of 20 years and 237 days.
