Michael Cunningham was born in Ohio on November 6, 1952. An American fiction writer and Yale University professor, he is best known for his 1998 work, The Hours, which won both the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. His other novels include Specimen Days (2005) and By Nightfall (2010). His novel, The Hours, was made into a feature film starring Nicole Kidman. He studied English literature at Stanford University and later earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Iowa. He published some of his early short stories in the Paris Review and the Atlantic Monthly.

Cunningham’s debut novel, The Hours, established him as a major figure in American literature, and his 2010 novel, By Nightfall, was equally favorably regarded by critics in the United States. Cunningham edited Walt Whitman’s Laws for Creations, a collection of poetry and prose, and co-wrote a screenplay with Susan Minot based on Minot’s novel Evening. Evening, a 2007 film starring Glenn Close, Toni Collette, and Meryl Streep, was produced by him.
Cunningham served as a judge for one of NPR’s “Three Minute Fiction” contests in November 2010. Cunningham was confirmed as a consulting producer for a relaunch of the Tales of the City miniseries, based on Armistead Maupin’s book series of the same name, in April 2018.
