How did Michael Greenfield start his Professional Career?
In 1985, Michael’s first year competing in SCCA Formula Atlantic racing, he placed second in the National Championship Run-Offs at Road Atlanta. Between 1986 and 1987, he won four races in the ECAR Formula Atlantic Championship, coming in third place that year in terms of points.
He competed for Chip Ganassi Racing in six Indy Lights events in 1988, taking home a victory at Pocono. He and colleague Tony Bettenhausen both failed in their 1989 attempts to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 while driving the 1987 Lolachassis of Bettenhausen Racing.
The following year, Michael suffered a serious crash during practice at Pocono Raceway and finished outside of qualifying. He and his father, Peter, won the Camel Lights classification of the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1990.
In addition, he made a comeback to the CARTseries that year, competing in seven races in a 1987 Lola chassis and posting a career-best finish of 12th at the Meadowlands race.
He competed in the 1991 24 Hours of Daytona, raced twice more for Dale Coyne Racing, and returned in 1994 and 1995 to try to qualify for the Indy 500 in a 1993 Lola powered by a pushrod V8 engine that his father, Peter, designed and built.
In 1994, Johnny Parsons was hired to drive the team’s vehicle because Michael was unable to complete rookie orientation. As a result, the car never got going and failed to qualify.
In 1995, Michael took up the driving responsibilities, but he again failed to pass the test. Due to a large decrease in turbo boost for the pushrod V-8s, they were unable to accelerate. In 1995, he departed the business.
