On December 29, 2013, in the French Alps above Méribel, Schumacher was skiing down the Combe de Saulire with his 14-year-old son Mick. Despite wearing a ski helmet, he fell and hit his head on a rock while traversing an exposed off-piste region between Piste Chamois and Piste Mauduit.
His medical professionals believe that if he had not been wearing a helmet, he would have died. After being airlifted to a hospital in Grenoble, Michael underwent two surgical procedures. A traumatic brain injury forced the former Formula One racer into a medically induced coma.
Schumacher left Grenoble Hospital in June 2014 to continue his recovery at Switzerland’s Lausanne University Hospital. In September 2014, Michael was released from the hospital and taken home to continue his rehabilitation.
Similarly, the former German racer was reported to be “paralyzed and in a wheelchair,” “unable to talk,” and “having memory issues” two months later. Schumacher’s manager, Sabine Kehm, stated that his health was gradually improving “considering the severity of the injury he had” in May 2015.
