The incident happened on U.S. Highway 50 at the 8600 block of Memory Lane at about 1:15 p.m., according to Brad White, the fire and rescue chief for O’Fallon, Illinois. In the crash, a 29-year-old Belleville resident was riding in a Chevrolet van and Michael Theiss was operating an eastbound Nissan on E. Highway 50.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Nissan impacted the Chevrolet van on the driver’s side as it was turning left onto westbound E. Highway 50. Michael Theiss tragically died from his injuries sustained in the crash. The Chevrolet van’s driver was hurt in the collision as well, and he was taken to a local hospital right away.
Owing to the gravity of the incident, the Illinois State Police and the Metro East Crash Assistance Team (MECAT) were called to the scene to do a comprehensive crash reconstruction with the goal of illuminating the series of events preceding the collision. Following the collision, U.S. Highway 50 was momentarily blocked between Memory Lane and Reider Road in order to support emergency response activities and the inquiry.
