Michael Curtis Waltrip was born on April 30, 1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky, to parents Leroy Waltrip and Margaret Jean Evans. He is the younger brother of Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Waltrip, both of whom died in 2014.

He asked his older brother, Darell Waltrip, and his father for help when he was a teenager to improve his racing talents. They did encourage him, though, to focus on his academics. Bobby, his older brother, kept him motivated by accompanying him to Kentucky go-kart races.

When Michael Waltrip was 15 years old, his brother Bobby Waltrip accompanied him to local go-cart races in his homeland of Kentucky. His professional stock-car racing career began in 1981 when he won the Mini-Modified track title at Kentucky Motor Speedway.

In 1983, he won the Darlington Dash Series Championship. In 1996, he participated in and won the Winston Open. He later competed in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series. From 1987 to 1995, Waltrip worked for Bahari Racing, then for Wood Brothers Racing from 1996 to 1998, and last for Jimmy Smith/ Mattei Racing from 1999 to 2000.
