Who is Mike Connors? 

Mike Connors (August 15, 1925 – January 26, 2017) was an American actor best known for his role as private detective Joe Mannix in the CBS television series Mannix from 1967 to 1975, a role that earned him a Golden Globe Award in 1970, the first of six consecutive nominations, and four consecutive Emmy nominations from 1970 to 1973. Tightrope! (1959–1960) and Today’s FBI (1981–1982) were also short-lived series in which he starred. Connors had a six-decade acting career. He also featured in and produced some films, including Sudden Fear (1952), Good Neighbor Sam (1964), Situation Hopeless… But Not Serious (1965), Stagecoach (1966), Kiss the Girls and Make Them Die (1966), and Too Scared to Scream (1985).

Early Life and Bio

Krekor Ohanian, Jr. (Armenian: ) was born in Fresno, California, on August 15, 1925, to Armenian parents Krikor Ohanian, Sr., and Alice (née Surabian). They had six children: Paul I, Paul II, Dorothy M., Arpesri A., Krekor, and Eugene. They married in 1915 and had six children: Paul I, Paul II, Dorothy M., Arpesri A., Krekor, and Eugene. His father was an attorney who defended many Armenians who were poor and unable to communicate in English.

Career

In high school, Connors was an ardent basketball player who earned the moniker “Touch” from his teammates. He participated in the United States Army Air Forces as an enlisted man during WWII. After the war, he received a basketball scholarship and used the G.I. Bill to attend the University of California at Los Angeles, where he played under John Wooden. Following in his father’s footsteps, Connors attended law school and trained to become an attorney. He was a Phi Delta Theta fraternity member. Coach Wilbur Johns introduced Connors to his buddy, director William A. Wellman, after a basketball game. Wellman was impressed by Connors’ voice and expressive face while playing basketball and urged him to pursue acting.

After Connors began acting, his agent Henry Willson decided that the name “Ohanian” was too close to that of actor George O’Hanlon, so he gave him the stage name “Touch Connors,” which was based on his basketball moniker. “Connors” was an “excellent all-American name,” according to Willson. Connors later remarked that he despised the name “from day one” and that not using his name was his single major career regret. He sought to be recognized as Ohanian after landing the lead role in Tightrope!, but Columbia Pictures advised him that he had already done too much work as Connors, but he was allowed to change his initial name to Mike.

Connors’ film career began in the early 1950s when he appeared in the thriller Sudden Fear alongside Joan Crawford and Jack Palance in a supporting part (1952). Producer Joseph Kaufman had first turned him down for an audition owing to his lack of experience, but after sneaking into Republic Pictures and seeing director David Miller, Connors was granted the opportunity to read the script and was awarded the job.
