Amer, his sister Haifa, his brother, and his mother fled Kuwait in October 1990, when he was nine years old, during the Gulf War. They immigrated to the United States and settled in Houston, Texas. In 1992, his father, a telecom engineer, joined them in the United States.
While his older brothers were studying abroad, Amer attended Piney Point Elementary School. His father died when he was 14 years old in 1995. One of his brothers, Omar, is a pilot, and Amer (who later changed the family name to Najjar) is a biochemist with a Ph.D. He will be 41 years old in 2022.
Mohammed became a US citizen in 2009, allowing him to visit family in Palestine for the first time in nearly 20 years. He also made his first trips to Kuwait and Baghdad since fleeing with his family.
