Mona Hammond Died At 91 Years Of Age

Recently, Jamaican-British actress Mona Hammond passed away at the age of 91. She was famous for her role as Blossom Jackson on the British serial opera EastEnders. A spokesperson for EastEnders commented,

“In Blossom Jackson, Mona created a no-nonsense grandmother who was well-liked by both the audience and her coworkers.”

Marcus Ryder, chairman of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, posted on social media about her passing. Hammond also co-founded the Talawa Theatre Company in Croydon. The organization issued the following declaration:

“As one of Talawa’s founders, a trailblazer, and an advocate of Black British theatre, Mona’s passion and vision will continue to be essential to all we do, and her legacy will continue to shine brightly.”

Her cause of death is currently unknown.

Mona Hammond rose to fame after starring in the popular soap opera EastEnders. She portrayed Blossom Jackson, the grandmother of Alan Jackson and the great-grandmother of Billie and Kai Jackson.

Blossom’s debut on the show occurred on May 16, 1994. She was born in Tobago in July of 1926 and raised in East London.

Blossom’s first marriage ended when Nathan abandoned her, and she spent the rest of her life with Bill, who died in 1993. Hammond played the role until 1997 when she reprised it alongside her on-screen grandson Alan Jackson.

Mona Hammond, who was born on January 1, 1931, traveled to the United Kingdom in 1959 and attended the City Literary Institute in London for two years as an evening student. In 1964, she graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) on a scholarship.

She began her career on stage before appearing in television series including Softly, Softly, and The Troubleshooters. In 1970, her performance as Lady Macbeth at the Roundhouse was praised by critics.

Peter Coe directed the adaption of Macbeth set in Africa. After that, she continued to act in plays by new Black authors.

1985 saw the founding of the Talawa Theatre Company by Hammond, Yvonne Brewster, Inigo Espejel, and Carmen Munroe. Mona has participated in the vast majority of the group’s award-winning productions.

After starring in The Sweeney, Wolcott, Black Silk, Juliet Bravo, Playboy of the West Indies, Casualty, and When Love Dies, she rose to stardom on television. She played both Jan Sargent and Velma Armitage in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street.

She played Mabel Thompson in the BBC radio soap opera The Archers after her stint on EastEnders. She appeared in several sitcoms, such as Desmond’s, Porkpie, Us Girls, Chef!, and The Crouches.

Hammond also appeared on the children’s television program Pig-Heart Boy. Among her other television credits are Making Out, Trial & Retribution, Storm Damage, White Teeth, A Touch of Frost, Doctors, and Death in Paradise.

She appeared in numerous films, such as Manderlay, Kinky Boots, Fords on Water, and 10,000 B.C.
