Moussa Djenepo (born 15 June 1998) is a Malian professional footballer who plays for Premier League side Southampton and the Mali national team as a winger or attacking midfielder.

How did Moussa Djenepo start his Professional Career?

Standard Liège

Djenepo joined Standard Liège on loan with the option to buy on January 31, 2017. On 30 May 2017, the club activated his buyout clause, making the trade permanent. On August 27, 2017, he made his professional debut for Standard Liège in a 4-0 loss against Club Brugge in the Belgian First Division A. Djenepo scored his first goal on March 11, 2018, in a 3-2 away win over Oostende at Versluys Arena.

Djenepo appeared as a replacement for Mehdi Carcela in the 2018 Belgian Cup Final, which Standard Liège won 1-0 after extra time to qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

Southampton

Djenepo signed a four-year contract with Premier League team Southampton on June 13, 2019. for an undisclosed fee of £14 million. On August 24, 2019, he scored his first goal for Southampton in a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion. Djenepo’s second goal for the club came in a 1-0 win over Sheffield United, and it was voted goal of the month in September 2019. Djenepo was sent off against Newcastle on March 7, 2020, after Graham Scott checked the pitchside monitor. Djenepo would not be seen again that season.

Djenepo made his season debut in a 1-0 loss at Crystal Palace on September 12, 2020, replacing Will Smallbone in the 77th minute. Djenepo scored his first goal of the 2020-21 season in a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on October 4, 2020. Djenepo had a muscular strain and was forced to leave the game against Liverpool in the first half on January 4, 2021. Djenepo would score his second goal of the season in a 0-3 FA Cup victory over Bournemouth on March 20, 2021.

Djenepo made his debut for the 2021-22 season on August 14, 2021, in a 3-1 loss to Everton. Djenepo appeared in only 16 games for the club this season and scored no goals.

Djenepo made his season debut on August 6, 2022, in a 4-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur. Southampton reported on September 14, 2022, that Djenepo has signed a new three-year contract extension until 2025.[25] Djenepo scored in a 2-0 win over Manchester City in the EFL Cup on January 11, 2023.

International Career

Djenepo is a Mali under-20 international who competed in the 2017 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.

Djenepo was called up to the senior team for the first time on October 3, 2017. On October 6, he made his debut against Ivory Coast in a goalless 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification match. Djenepo scored against South Sudan in a 3-0 win in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification home match on March 23, 2019.
