Career
Dr. Sen-Gupta began practicing law at the Calcutta High Court after receiving his law degree, and he also began teaching at Calcutta University’s Law College. In 1917, he was appointed vice-principal of Dhaka College’s Law Department. From 1921 to 1924, he was a professor in the Law Department at Dacca University, where he rose to prominence as a legal scholar. He was also the University’s first Dean of the Faculty of Law and the first Provost of Jagannath Hall. In 1924, Dr. Sengupta returned to Calcutta, resumed his law practice, and began teaching law at Calcutta University.
Naresh Chandra Sen-Gupta made significant contributions to Bengali literature through his excellent essays, short stories, plays, and novels, in addition to his legal practice and writings on the law. He was a prolific writer of his time, writing approximately sixty novels and dramas, many of which were controversial due to their liberal philosophy and support for women’s rights in the then-conservative Bengali society. He was a pioneer in writing naturalistic Bengali novels that explored criminal psychology and the role of sex in crime. He cared more about a woman’s personality than about her goodness and chastity.
