How did Neela start her Professional Career?
Ananda Jayasinghe and Vincent Somapala taught Wickramasinghe music theory and composition. She performed her first song for the “Amateur Voice” program on Radio Ceylon in 1959.
In 1967, Neela Wickramasinghe had the chance to record her first song with Radio Ceylon. On the basis of the songs performed by the SLBC’s research division, she was selected as an A-grade performer in 1973.
She studied North Indian Classical Music and received a Sangeeth Visharada Degree in 1974. A number of Wickramasinghe’s singles, including duets with T. M. Jayaratne, were hit.
After that, Wickramasinghe made the decision to train musicians. After 23 years of teaching at several schools, including an eight-year stint at Visakha Vidyalaya in Colombo, she made the decision to retire early in 1998. Wickramasinghe was identified as having advanced abdomen cancer but lived.
