Nell Fortner was born in Jackson, Mississippi. She graduated from New Braunfels High School in Texas, where she was named an all-state basketball player and Parade All-American. She began by winning a dual-sport scholarship to the University of Texas, where she played basketball and volleyball from 1978 to 1982.

During her time at Texas, Fortner made her USA Basketball debut with the 1978 U.S. Olympic Festival South team, winning silver. On the academic front, she earned an undergraduate degree in physical education from the University of Texas in 1982. She later received a master’s degree in education from Stephen F. Austin in 1987.

Fortner’s academic career has advanced in addition to her ability to coach effectively. She widened her resume by obtaining degrees in physical education and, eventually, a master’s. Her university degree gave her vital lessons that she has used in her coaching. In addition, Nell has worked as an ESPN announcer and commentator twice.
