Elizabeth Mary Jane Cochran, the mother of Nellie Cochran, was born on May 5th, 1864. “Cochran’s Mills,” where she was born, is today a Pittsburgh neighborhood.
The Conchrans migrated from County Londonderry, Ireland, in the 1790s. Elizabeth’s father, Michael Cochran, had worked as a laborer and mill worker.
He afterward went on to work at Cochran’s Mills as a merchant, postmaster, and associate justice. Mary Jane, Elizabeth’s mother, was Michael’s second spouse.
After the passing of his first wife, Catherine Murphy, he wed her. Elizabeth had 10 half-siblings in addition to her four full siblings.
When Nellie reached maturity, Pinky, as she was nicknamed as a youngster for regularly donning that hue, changed her last name to “Cochrane.” She even attended a boarding school, but she was forced to leave after her father passed away. Later on, she started attending Indiana Normal School.

After sending a bawdy reply to an editorial item that was printed in the Pittsburgh Dispatch, Bly became well-known for her writing.
What Girls Are Good For by Erasmus Wilson asserted that girls are only capable of performing certain domestic tasks.
The managing editor of the newspaper, George Madden, was impressed by Bly’s response to the piece. He gave her a full-time position in return.
Under the pen name “Nellie Bly,” Bly started contributing articles to the Pittsburgh Dispatch in 1885. It’s from the well-known song “Nelly Bly” by Stephan Foster.
As a reporter for “Pittsburgh Dispatch,” she stressed the significance of women’s rights and the effects of gender inequality. She provided essays about the hardships of female factory workers and divorcées.
Nellie was relocated to the women’s page to cover fashion, society, and gardening after receiving complaints from factory owners. She decided to pursue a more fulfilling profession at that point.
Nellie decided to go to Mexico and work as a foreign journalist as a result. She reported on the locals for six months while she was in Mexico.
