Nellie Tayloe Ross was born in Saint Joseph, MO on November 29, 1876. 14th Governor of Wyoming from 1925 to 1927 who was the first female governor in the history of the United States. She was known for her staunch advocacy of prohibition. She used the occasion of Calvin Coolidge‘s inaugural parade to show the nation that her state wasn’t just uncivilized wild land. She was elected into office partly on the popularity of her husband William Ross, who died after a year and a half as Wyoming’s governor from complications from an appendectomy.

An American politician who served as Wyoming’s 14th governor from 1925 to 1927 and as director of the United States Mint from 1933 to 1953. She was one of the first women to be sworn in as governor of a U.S. state and remains Wyoming’s only female governor.
Ross was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Tennessee native James Wynns Tayloe and Missouri River plantation owner Elizabeth Blair Green. In 1884, her family relocated to Miltonvale, Kansas, and she graduated from Miltonvale High School in 1892. She spent two years at a teacher-training college before teaching kindergarten for four years.
Ross married William B. Ross on September 11, 1902, whom she met while visiting relatives in Tennessee in 1900. William B. Ross was Wyoming’s governor from 1923 until his death on October 2, 1924. Ross was the first female governor of the United States when she won a special election to succeed her late husband’s successor, Frank Lucas, on January 5, 1925. During the 1920s, she was a staunch supporter of Prohibition. She was defeated for re-election in 1926, but she remained a member of the Democratic Party.
Ross became the first female Director of the United States Mint in 1933. Despite her initial skepticism, she formed a strong bond with Mary Margaret O’Reilly, the Assistant Director of the Mint and one of the highest-ranking female civil servants in the United States at the time. Ross served as Director for five terms before retiring in 1953. She traveled and wrote for various women’s magazines in her later years. Ross died at the age of 101 in Washington, D.C.
