Nessa Barrett Is Frank About Her Eating Disorder And Weight Loss

Nessa Barrett

Nessa Barrett released her song “dying on the inside” on February 25, 2022, along with a music video. The alt-pop singer-songwriter had previously spoken openly about her borderline personality disorder, anxiety, and depression because she strongly believes in honesty and being upfront with her audience.

And this time, after much adversity, she spoke up about her battles with eating disorders and weight loss in her heartbreaking dance-rock song. The song is about the unattainable beauty standards that lead many young people to develop eating disorders and a fixation on weight loss.

My borderline personality disorder, anxiety, and sadness have all been brought up. But my eating condition has been the one thing that I have found it difficult to talk about, said Barrett in a statement.

She continued that she wanted to write a song that people could identify with while also sharing her problems. Even if listeners did not have eating disorders, they could nevertheless identify with it since they may have struggled with online comparison.

Nessa Barrett explains her eating Disorder and Weight Loss

The singer opened out about her disease in detail while promoting her new song in an interview with Nylon, stating she was unaware of the issue.

When Barrett compared herself to her pals in high school, her relationship with food deteriorated. She began her road of unhealthful weight loss because she wanted to look more like them.

At first, I would ask my mother to pack my lunch or say, “Hey Mom, I’m going to have lunch at school,” and then I wouldn’t consume any food. The singer admitted that occasionally she would conceal her dinner or pretend to be eating it in her room before flushing it down the toilet.

The singer would browse pro-anorexic Tumblr posts without realizing it was an issue or that it was offensive to look at. She had a weight reduction and “stick figures” obsession.

Sadly, her internet popularity just made things worse. People began making remarks about her appearance, calling her obese, and inquiring as to whether she was pregnant or had put on weight.

She didn’t receive a borderline personality disorder (BPD) diagnosis until she was 18 years old, and it wasn’t until then that she discovered eating problems frequently co-occurred with BPD.

The Recovery Journey of Nessa Barrett

The singer observed that there wasn’t enough discussion about eating issues, so she wrote a song about it. Her first step toward healing came with it.

Her treatment appointments always preceded her writing sessions. She spoke candidly about what she had been learning from her therapists in an interview with Seventeen.

“I’ve been discussing this with my therapist, and we’ve been fact-checking. When I read a statement that is extremely critical, my emotional mind will immediately think, “Oh my god, this is true,” but I will pause and ask, “Is this really true? Does someone’s opinion of me affect how much I value and respect myself or how confident I am? Based on this comment, am I to assume that this will be my identification moving forward? “, the singer said.

Barrett highlighted that it was about fact-checking and giving herself a few minutes to realize that the one comment meant nothing, which of course it wasn’t.
