Nicholas Lodge Passed Away At The Age Of 60

On Wednesday, August 10, Nicholas Lodge, a well-known cake designer and pastry chef, died at the age of 60. Dawn Butler, a fellow cake designer from the United Kingdom known as Dinkydoodle, confirmed his death in a Facebook post.

Lodge’s family and friends have not yet revealed the cause of death.

The Legacy of Nicholas Lodge

Chef Nicholas Lodge’s work was well-known around the world, and he was regarded as one of the most talented cake artists. Lodge has been a pastry pioneer for nearly 35 years. Lodge’s DVD lessons, books, and other training programs are well-known in the sugar art community. According to his official website:

“The world of sugar art has introduced him to kings and celebrities, as well as taken him all over the world.”

Lodge is said to have started making cakes and pastries in the early 1970s. He allegedly made his first cake when he was ten years old for his parents’ wedding anniversary. After finishing his education, he worked for a decade as a cake designer at a local bakery. The cake chef began teaching at Mary Ford’s Cake Artistry Academy in Bournemouth in his early twenties. He was a member of the team that created cakes for the Royal family at the time.

According to the claims on his website:

“Nicholas and his team of decorators were hired to work on projects for the British royal family and other celebrities. This included one of the official wedding cakes for Lady Diana and Prince Charles in 1981. Nicholas recreated this royal wedding cake while the Prince and Princess of Wales were touring Tokyo, Japan.”

His participation in other royal events is also noted on the website:

“Nicholas was also tasked with creating cakes for the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday and Prince Harry’s baptism.”

In the mid-1980s, Nicholas Lodge released his first cookbook, Cakes and Pastries. Lodge moved to the United States six years later, in 1991, where he is said to have lived until his death. Within a year of his transfer, Lodge and his business partner, Scott Ewing, co-founded The International Sugar Art Collection (ISAC) and The International School of Sugar and Confectionary Arts, both of which focused on sugar art education and the manufacturing of cake and pastry-making instruments.

Before his death, Lodge was inducted into the International Cake Exploration Society (ICES) Hall of Fame. He was named one of Dessert Professional’s Top 10 Cake Artists and Pastry Chefs in 2010.
