Bonitto played three games as a true freshman before taking a redshirt for the season. He did, however, start six games as an outside linebacker during his redshirt freshman season, totaling 43 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. Furthermore, as a redshirt sophomore, he recorded 29 stops, 10 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks, receiving second-team All-American honors from the Associated Press.

Following the conclusion of the regular season, he announced his decision to forego his redshirt senior year and enter the 2022 NFL draft, as well as withdraw from the 2021 Alamo Bowl.
