Former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley has declared her candidacy for the presidency in 2024.
“Now is not the time to be cautious. The time has come for a powerful and proud America “She posted a campaign video’s URL.
She is the second major Republican candidate to enter the race; her former boss, Donald Trump, began his campaign in November.
Ms. Haley, the third Indian-American to run for the presidency
The 51-year-old former governor stated in 2021 that she would not oppose Mr. Trump for the presidency. In recent months, however, she revised her opinion, emphasizing the need for a “generational shift.”
The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, and former vice president, Mike Pence, are both expected to begin their own White House campaigns.
Ms. Haley has previously criticized Mr. Trump’s conduct prior to and during his supporters’ attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021.
She stated in a speech the day following the incident that “his acts since election day would be viewed harshly by history.”
Early polls indicate that Mr. Trump has a solid advantage in South Carolina, a state whose primary he won on his way to the president in 2016 – a sign of the tough battle the former ambassador will face, even on what should be friendly terrain.
According to a recent poll conducted by the Trafalgar Group, Mr. Trump is in first place with 43%, while Ms. Haley is in fourth place with 12%.
However, a poll released on Tuesday indicated that Mr. Trump’s once-resilient political power among party members may be waning.
According to a Reuters/Ipsos study, 40% of registered Republicans said he should not run for the White House in 2024 while remaining the favorite among the party’s probable candidates.
The same survey revealed that 52% of registered Democrats oppose Mr. Biden’s re-election bid.
Before Ms. Haley, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, whose 2015 effort failed to gather much traction, and current Vice President Kamala Harris, who sought the 2020 nomination, also ran for president.
