An American politician who previously served as a United States Representative from New York from 1989 to 2021. She belongs to the Democratic Party. Lowey was also co-Dean of the New York Congressional Delegation with former U.S. Representative Eliot Engel. Lowey’s district was the 20th from 1989 to 1993, the 18th from 1993 to 2013, and the 17th since 2013. Mondaire Jones, a fellow Democrat, took her place. Lowey became the first woman to chair the House Appropriations Committee in 2018. On October 10, 2019, she announced her retirement and decision not to run for re-election to Congress in 2020.
