De Castro began his career as a broadcaster during the Marcos dictatorship when press freedom was restricted. As a field reporter, he worked for Johnny de Leon, a popular radio presenter at the time.
He served as a radio announcer for RPN’s DWWW station from 1982 to 1986. De Castro joined ABS-CBN after Marcos was deposed in 1986. On Good Morning, Philippines, he made his television debut as the host of the segment “At Your Service.”
In addition, he became the host of Kabayan on DZMM, an ABS-CBN radio station. In 1987, De Castro joined Magandang Gabi… Bayan eventually became the anchor of the news and current affairs program TV Patrol.
He was named the newscast’s general head of production and DZMM’s vice president in January 1999, after becoming the newscast’s only anchor in July 1996.
