He toured and recorded with Johnny Cash, and he continued to play with him on and off for the next thirty years. He met Nancy Short, a classically trained cellist who was performing in a folk group. Bob Dylan asked him to perform on the country-folk album Nashville Skyline, and he later joined Johnny Cash’s TV show’s house band. One of the members, Kris Kristofferson, hired Blake to tour with him. Blake collaborated with folk singer Joan Baez on the song “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” which became a hit. In 1971, he joined the bluegrass band Aero-plain, which was led by multi-instrumentalist John Hartford and featured fiddler Vassar Clements.
Blake also played dobro on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s 1972 record, Will the Circle Be Unbroken. Blake released his first solo album, Home in Sulphur Springs, in 1972. (Rounder, 1972). He and Nancy released their first album, The Fields of November (Flying Fish, 1974), shortly after his debut, with Nancy on a hillbilly cello. They married in 1975 and have been performing together for the past two decades.
