Norman Lear was the oldest child of Jeanette and traveling salesman Hyman “Herman” Lear and was born in New Haven, Connecticut. His younger sister, Claire Lear Brown, lived between 1925 and 2015. Lear was raised in a Jewish home in Connecticut and received a bar mitzvah.

His father was Russian, and his mother was Ukrainian. When Lear landed in Chelsea, Massachusetts, at the age of nine, his father was imprisoned for illegally selling bonds. Lear referred to his father as a “rascal” and noted that his mother had a greater influence on Edith Bunker’s character than his father had on Archie Bunker, whom Lear portrayed on the program as a white Protestant.
