Sharma is an attorney and member of the Indian Parliament. Until June 2022, she was the BJP’s official spokesperson.

After Nupur Sharma returned from London in 2010-2011, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hired him. In 2013, she became a member of the BJP’s Delhi working committee.

Arvind Pradhan, Amit Shah, and Arun Jaitley are just a few of the influential people who are said to have worked with her.

When the Aam Aadmi Party’s ‘Arvind Kejriwal’ was nominated for the Delhi Legislative Assembly in 2015, she was only 30 years old.

The BJP in Delhi eventually appointed her as Manoj Tiwari’s official spokesperson. In 2020, under J. P. Nadda’s leadership, the BJP appointed Nupur as its national spokesman.

What Caused the Nupur Sharma Scandal?

In a TV channel debate in June 2022, Nupur Sharma stirred a stir by bringing up the Prophet Muhammad.

On May 26, 2022, a politician appeared on the television network Times Now to discuss the Gyanvapi Mosque topic.

At one point, Nupur said something that caused a stir by questioning how old Muhammad’s wife Aisha was when they wed and consummated their relationship.

Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia were among the Gulf states that expressed shock at their allegedly offensive remarks and called on India to issue an apology.

The video of her comments was shared on social media to widespread condemnation after being published the following day by Mohammed Zubair, co-founder of the fact-checking website Alt News.

The footage of the program was taken off from Times Now’s YouTube page the next day.

As a result of this incident, Sharma received numerous death threats from a wide range of people.

Several other states also saw protests in response to Nupur Sharma’s remark.

Is Nupur Sharma in Trouble Because of Her Defamatory Remarks About the Prophet Muhammad?

During a TV debate on an English news station, the party’s spokesperson, Nupur Bharatiya Janata Party, allegedly made insulting comments against Prophet Muhammad, prompting the police to file a First Information Report (FIR) against her.

South Mumbai’s Pydhonie Police Station received a report from Irfan Shaikh, joint secretary of the radical Muslim group Raza Academy.

Following that, FIRs were submitted in cities throughout the country, including one submitted by a lawmaker in Hyderabad.

In addition, on June 3, violence erupted after a Muslim organization in Kanpur called for a bandh (shutdown) in response to the comments, leaving 40 people injured.

Sharma’s comments, however, continued to be shared online, especially in the Arab world.

On June 4th, insults to the Prophet Mohammed were among the top 10 trending hashtags in all GCC countries and Turkey.

When exactly did Nupur Sharma get kicked out of the BJP?

Nupur was expelled from the BJP on June 5th, 2022. According to a party statement, the BJP strongly condemns attacks on religious leaders of any faith.

Sharma then “unconditionally” apologized for her remarks, however, she reaffirmed her earlier point that she had spoken out because of “constant abuse and disregard” for the Hindu god Shiva.

Many members of the BJP, including some of their elected representatives, defended Nupur and attacked the Party and the government for abandoning her and giving in to pressure.
