An IPOB commander Nwagwu Chiwendu who is accused of planning Ahmed Gulak’s murder has been taken into custody by Nigerian security forces.

The deputy commander of the unlawful Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is accused of killing Ahmed Gulak, a political adviser to former president Goodluck Jonathan, has been detained by the Nigerian military.

He said that his group was responsible for both the kidnapping of the two foreigners on the Owerri-Okigwe Road and the murder of the two Police inspectors who were traveling with them. He also acknowledged to killing Gulak.

How did Ahmed Gulak fare?

Mr. Gulak, a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, was shot and killed by gunmen on May 30, 2021, in Owerri, Imo State. The lawmaker was attacked as he traveled to Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri to catch a flight to Abuja.

Later, the state’s Police would attribute the death of the former political adviser to the IPOB and its militant branch, ESN.

A group by the name of IPOB is attempting to split some of South-South and South-East Nigeria into a separate Biafra state.

The suspect was presented to the media on Wednesday in Owerri, the Imo state capital. The suspect, according to the police, is an army deserter from Amaohuru in Nguru, Aboh-Mbaise LGA in Imo state.

The suspect claimed that the politician was killed because he defied the assailants’ demands. Ngwagu was recognized by the police as the person behind the politician’s murder during his march.

What acted IPOB?

Although IPOB has continuously denied being behind the attacks, the group has recently been accused of using violent attacks in the region to achieve its agenda.

Military sources told SaharaReporters that Chiwendu joined ESN after leaving the army in January 2021.

Michael Abattam, a spokesman for the Imo Police command, claimed that Nwagwu, also known as Onye-army, had been on the police’s wanted list. He acknowledged organizing high-profile killings, armed robberies, kidnappings, and other assaults.

He ascended to become the IPOB’s deputy commander in Imo State within a few months, according to rumors that he was the militant group’s main instructor in weapon handling.
