The conservative Plath family was first exposed to these liberal concepts by Olivia Marie Meggs. Like the Plaths, Meggs was raised in a religious environment, but she was also adventurous and pushed the bounds of what her devout parents would allow her to experience.
When Marie tried to convince her in-laws to loosen the conservative restrictions on their behavior, they resisted her efforts with ferociousness. Her connection with her in-laws soured when she wed Ethan Plath because they believed she was a poor influence on Ethan and his brothers.

Olivia and her nine siblings were raised in a remote area of Virginia. Don and Karen Meggs welcomed Olivia Plath into the world on April 25, 1998. Before relocating to a remote area of Virginia as their family grew, Don and Karen lived in Delaware. In Virginia, where everyone helped out on the farm, they reared ten kids.
In Roanoke, Virginia, Don was a software developer, and Karen was a stay-at-home mom. Don worked for a Fortune 500 company in Delaware, where the couple said they were overburdened with raising their kids there. On American Family Revival, Don said:
“Leaving our extended family behind and leaving where we [Don and Karen] had both grown up was a hard decision. In Delaware, I worked for a sizable Fortune 500 corporation, but when I moved to Virginia, it was a small business. Although there was some risk involved, I believed it was what God intended for us to do.
Don and Karen discovered a friendly neighborhood in Southwest Virginia that shared their values. Olivia said she valued her huge family because she received constant instruction and learned how to share. She uttered:
“We discovered that personal space didn’t exist. Americans tend to think that they live in a bubble where other people aren’t allowed, which fosters a selfish mentality. We had to learn to share, so I’ve never had a lot of my own stuff.
Marie persuaded her family to compromise on some of their rigid religious convictions.
Plath claimed in Without A Crystal Ball that she persuaded her family to go to a Christian fundamentalist camp when she was an adolescent and that this decision proved to be a turning point for them.
Because of the camp, Olivia’s family agreed with her that some of the religion’s tenets were restrictive against women. Olivia was quite happy to learn that her family had given up several gender-oppressive religious customs and beliefs.
Olivia found it difficult to convince her parents to alter their religious beliefs. Even though she and her parents occasionally had disagreements, their relationship remained strong. Karen was honored in Plath’s Mother’s Day tribute in 2019:
“Mom, despite having endured more in your life than any woman ought to, you have never complained, never vented your frustrations on me, and you gave up everything to raise me in kindness and grace. You are my best buddy, and I will always be grateful.
Plath also made light of the fact that, unlike her mother, she wouldn’t want 10 kids. Olivia Plath and her mother-in-law became close because she provided the affection that Olivia’s mother was unable to provide.
She called Karen her best friend in her Mother’s Day post, implying the two were close. Olivia afterward argued that it wasn’t close enough. You can see why Olivia could have felt a little neglected by her mother given that Karen had eleven kids to nurture.
She was drawn to Kim Plath, her future mother-in-law, because of her need for maternal love. Olivia claimed in the season 4 finale that Kim, a mother of ten kids, showered her with attention and made her feel special. Says Plath:
“I trusted her more than I did my own mother, and I really, truly needed a mom figure at that point in my life. Being one of ten children and having a non-nurturing mother made it very easy to feel forgotten and disregarded.
When Olivia discovered Kim was taking advantage of her, her attitude toward Kim began to change. Olivia remarked, “I felt like I was only valuable to her if I performed what she wanted me to do.
After Plath married Ethan and saw how much Kim had used her, she said that their relationship utterly fell apart. According to Olivia, Kim was using Ethan’s credit card and had updated his password to prevent him from preventing her from using it.
Olivia claimed that the first disagreement she had with Kim was over her refusal to share Kim Ethan’s new password after she had reset it. Says Plath:
“Oh, can you send it to me?” she asks. And I said, “No.” His current password is that. And when she asked me to meet her in town over that, it was the first time she ever lost it, yelled at me, and slammed the door on me.
To escape themselves from Ethan’s controlling parents, Olivia and Ethan moved to Florida. She admitted to Us Weekly that she was willing to mend fences with Ethan’s parents, but that she needed them to make a concession. Iola stated:
“I want to move on, and I’ll let them know if I ever change my mind and decide I want a connection with them in the future. But for the time being, I’m just eager to relocate, move in with Ethan, and start figuring out who I am and what I want out of life. I would go back to it if they ever apologized to us.
Olivia may, at last, be willing to reconcile fences with her former cherished mother-in-law. After learning of Kim and Barry’s separation, Olivia made an effort to repair relations with Ethan’s father-in-law.
Olivia said to Moriah, Ethan’s sister, in season 4, “I would like to revisit everything with him and like start brand new.”
The reconciliation was “new territory,” according to Barry. Infuriating Ethan and his brothers, Olivia stated in the season 4 finale that she was content with the strides she and Barry had made but didn’t feel ready to make amends with Kim.
After initially declining to attend Joshua Plath’s memorial because of Kim’s attendance, Olivia felt under pressure to mend fences and went to a family function where Kim was present. Given that it was their first meeting in a long time, Kim and Olivia exchanged greetings, a significant accomplishment. Kim stated:
It’s incredible. I said hello to Olivia when she was here, and she reciprocated. That is significant, to be sure. That has never occurred.
Olivia stated that she owed it to Ethan, Micah, and Moriah’s siblings to try to make amends with her mother-in-law. The second aspect is recognizing that the children are dealing with a lot and want to be involved in their life. I can interact with the kids and see them all through this.
