Paul Fix was an actor and screenwriter best remembered for his role as Marshal Micah Torrance in the television series ‘The Rifleman.’ He had a 56-year career and had appeared in more than 300 films and television shows. He was the man who taught actor John Wayne his iconic cowboy walk, and he was a close friend of his.
He was usually offered negative roles at the beginning of his career. With time, he began to take on more positive roles as well, and he became a highly sought-after character actor. Fix was best recognized for his appearances in western films, but he was also noted for playing a variety of characters. He had played attorneys, sheriffs, and spies, among other noteworthy characters, during his long career. He played a lawman in several western films and television shows. Fix and Ray Bonanza Teal was regarded as two of the top western lawmen on television and in films.
Childhood and Adolescence
Paul Fix was born in Dobbs Ferry, New York, on March 13, 1901. Wilhelm Fix and Louise C. Walz, his parents, were German immigrants who settled in New York in the 1870s. He and his five siblings (two sisters and three brothers) lived on his father’s 200-acre farm, the Manilla Anchor Brewery. His early years were spent in a safe and joyful environment. When he was only 13 years old, his mother died. His father died two years later, and the brewery had to close soon after. He was forced to reside with his married sister in Yonkers. He eventually had to go to Zanesville, Ohio, to live with his other married sister.
Career
Following the war, Fix worked as a character actor in New York, where he began his career. He moved to Hollywood in the 1920s and made the first of nearly 350 film and television appearances. He became acquaintances with John Wayne in the 1930s. Paul Fix was Wayne’s acting tutor and appeared in around 27 of Wayne’s films.
Fix appeared in early films with Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell, such as Lucky Star (1929) and Ladies Love Brutes (1930), and was a regular performer for the film’s director, Frank Borzage, eight times. Fix went on to play Richard Bravo in the 1950s cult classic The Bad Seed (1956) with Nancy Kelly, Heinz the cook in The Sea Chase (1955) with John Wayne and Lana Turner, and Elizabeth Taylor’s father in George Stevens’ Giant (1956) with James Dean.
In Gregory Peck’s To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Fix played the presiding judge. In The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), he portrayed the sheriff with John Wayne and Dean Martin. He starred alongside Wayne and Robert Mitchum in the 1966 film El Dorado. In 1972, he starred in the film Night of the Lepus, and the following year, he co-starred with James Coburn in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid as New Mexico rancher Pete Maxwell. He made an appearance in Wanda Nevada in 1979. The screenplay for John Wayne’s picture Tall in the Saddle was co-written by Fix.
