Paul Reubens, well known for his portrayal of the eccentric and quirk-filled Pee-wee Herman, has passed away, according to a statement posted on his Facebook page and by his management company on Monday. He was in his seventies.
A Facebook post about him said that in addition to being “a gifted and prolific talent, he will live on forever in the comedy pantheon and our hearts as a treasured friend and a man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”
The message claims that Reubens lost his cancer-related fight on Sunday night.
On Facebook, Reubens said,
“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been battling for the last six years. From the beginning, my friends, supporters, and fans have shown me a lot of love and admiration. I have cherished creating art for you all since I adore you all so.”
Reubens portrayed the eccentric Pee-wee Herman in Tim Burton’s 1985 movie “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” sporting his recognizable gray suit, red bow tie, and white shoes. The concept of the movie led to Pee-wee being assigned a search expedition to locate his stolen bicycle.
Following the popularity of the film, Reubens starred as Pee-wee in the five-season Saturday morning television series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.”
Because of his exposure inside a pornographic movie theater in 1991, he was sentenced to jail in Florida. Reubens received a fine, but the incident forced him to abandon his signature gray suit for more than 20 years.
“My lack of mood lasted for a pretty long time. Eventually, it grew to be quite a while. Wow, I said, immediately impressed. Describe your recovery strategy. I assume you are already aware of the answer. In 2010, he brought Pee-wee to Broadway and told the AP, “You just do it.”In my opinion, I could return without anyone’s consent. What do you have to lose then? I don’t even know.
“The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway” was adapted for television and debuted the next year to an Emmy nomination.
In a 2010 interview, Reubens stated that the incident at the theater did not mark the end of his career. In 1995, he was given an Emmy nod for his appearance on “Murphy Brown.”
Also, In the 1992 Tim Burton film “Batman Returns,” he portrayed Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. the Penguin’s father; in the 2001 Johnny Depp film “Blow,” he and Depp built a cocaine empire.
Paul Reubens entered a plea to a minor charge of obscenity for pictures he had in his possession in 2004, but he continued to work as an actor on television, making cameos in series including “30 Rock,” “Portlandia,” and “The Blacklist,” as well as picking up his part as the Penguin’s father on “Gotham.” He was in the Netflix film Pee-wee’s Big Holiday in 2016.
