He was born and reared in the Chicago suburbs and spent his teenage years in Palos Heights.

After completing his education at Carl Sandburg High School, Vallas enrolled at Moraine Valley Community College. He received a bachelor’s in history from Western Illinois University and a master’s in political science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before graduating. Greek-American Vallas has participated in a number of Greek community and cultural groups.

He has held significant positions in politics and education while serving as the superintendent of schools in Chicago, Philadelphia, and New Orleans. Paul Vallas presided over the Illinois Economic and Fiscal Commission from 1985 to 1990. He served as Mayor Richard M. Daley of Chicago’s municipal budget director from 1990 until 1993. Gus, Mark, and Paul Jr. are the three children that Vallas and his wife, Sharon Vallas, have. Mark Vallas passed away in 2018 due to an opiate addiction.
