Career
Pedro Linares began his career as a maker of Judas figures, which are customarily constructed of cartons during the Catholic Easter season in Mexico, as well as figurines for Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and other painters from Mexico City’s Academia de San Carlos School of Fine Arts. Linares devised the “Alebrije” when he was 30 years old in 1936, purportedly after suffering from high fever and unconsciousness as a result of peritonitis. The Alebrijes arose from feverish hallucinations depicting his death and rebirth in a mountainous terrain inhabited by these creatures, who were the animals Pedro had previously saved, but who returned to save his life when he needed it.
Linares began to manifest his concept after his peritonitis abated, and the art of producing alebrijes was born. He wanted his family and others to know about the animals he dreamed about, so he took a piece of paper and molded the images from memory, then painted them just as he saw them in his dream.
Following Judith Bronowski’s 1975 documentary Linares: Artesano de Cartón, Pedro Linares earned national and worldwide prominence. It was produced as part of a documentary series on Mexican traditional craft and resulted in traveling workshops led by the protagonists of the films. Manuel Jiménez Ramrez, a wood sculptor, was one of them. He took Linares’ idea of alebrijes and started making wooden “Oaxacan alebrijes.” Aside from the material, Oaxacan alebrijes differ in that they are more realistic animal representations and incorporate nahual themes.
Linares received the National Prize for Arts and Sciences (Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes) in the area of Popular Arts and Traditions in 1990, the highest honor bestowed by the Mexican government on craftspeople. Linares’s work for Diego Rivera is presently on display in Mexico City’s Anahuacalli Museum. His work has been shown at the Smithsonian Institution, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the Craft Contemporary, the Museum of Us, and the Fullerton Museum Center in the United States.
