Pernell Roberts was born on May 28, 1928, in Waycross, Georgia, to Pernell Elven Roberts Sr. and Minnie Myrtle Morgan Roberts. His father, Roberts Sr., worked as a Dr. Pepper salesman.He was always interested in acting and singing. When he was younger, Roberts used to act in school plays and sing at local USO concerts.

He attended the University of Maryland but did not finish his studies. He had previously enrolled at Georgia Tech but had not finished his studies. In 1946, Roberts began his military service in the United States Marine Corps.

Pernell Roberts made his professional theatrical debut in the production of The Man Who Came to Dinner at the Olney Theater in 1949. The following year, the actor relocated to Washington, D.C., where he landed a number of acting roles in a variety of plays.

In 1957, Robert signed a contract with Columbia Pictures. A year later, he landed his first major film role in Desire Under the Elms, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography.

After a long career in movies and television shows, Roberts’ biggest break came in 1959, when he was cast in the classic Western TV series Bonanza. In the series, he played Ben Cartwright’s urbane eldest son Adam Cartwright until 1965.

From 1979 to 1986, Roberts rose to prominence as chief surgeon Dr. John McIntyre on Trapper John, M.D. He appeared in the series alongside Gregory Harrison, Charles Siebert, and Madge Sinclair.

For his performance in Welcome Home at the Ivanhoe Theatre in 1973, he was nominated for a Joseph Jefferson Award.Similarly, Pernell appeared in an episode of Diagnosis: Murder in 1997, alongside Dick Van Dyke, Barry Van Dyke, and Victoria Rowell.

Pernell Roberts, 81, of Malibu, California, died from pancreatic cancer on January 24, 2010. When he died, his body was cremated, and his ashes were returned to his family.
