Portfolio Building and Recognition Thanks to the movie “In the Dark.”
Initially, Perry Mattfeld aspired to become a ballet dancer. Her family assisted her in this endeavor by having Debbie Allen, a well-known actress and dancer, train her.
Over the next nine years, Allen would cast Mattfeld in further productions, such as Alex in Wonderland and Ms. Allen’s World Premiere Musical. She made the most of every opportunity she was given, and by the time she was 12 years old, she was a full-time “employee” of the American Girl Dolls singing group.
In Disney’s The Wizards of Waverly Place, the former ballet dancer who now aspires to be an actor made her television debut (2009). She promptly followed with Escape from Polygamy (2012) and Secret Diary of an American Cheerleader (2012). (2013). Before 2017, the majority of her clientele were children and teenagers. She had her first appearance in a production geared at adults in the role of Mel in Shameless (2017–2018), which caught the eye of others.
She was cast in the 2019 film In The Dark. Mattfeld portrayed Murphy, as a reclusive, blind lady who abuses alcohol and despises her job. She trains guide dogs there, which is run by her parents (played by Kathleen York and Derek Webster). When Perry’s friend is murdered, her routine existence is turned upside down and she is forced to track down the murderer.
She was influenced by a real person, as was the show.
The character of Mattfeld, an obnoxious blind woman who reluctantly works at her parents’ house but later finds out about her friend’s murder, sounds challenging enough for any actor to play.
Although Mattfeld is talented, it’s fortunate for her that Laurie, a real person, served as the inspiration for her identity. She recognized her real-life counterpart right away and knew exactly what she was going through.
In an interview with goldenglobes.com, Matfield praised Laurie’s corrosive and audacious outlook on life. She claimed Laurie was the first person with a disability she thought she had encountered who wasn’t disabled.
She claims that in addition to serving as the show’s character consultant, she also rose to the position of staff writer. Mattfeld acted as Laurie’s shadow, staying with her as she got ready for the day, made breakfast, used the phone, and applied her makeup.
For any actor, this strategy would be challenging, but Mattfeld seems to have handled it well. She will be included in the Golden Globes magazine’s May 2020 issue for her portrayal of Murphy.
