Famous for his work on both stage and screen, Hunt won a Tony Award for directing the original Broadway production of the musical 1776 and went on to direct several made-for-TV movies. He directed Dead Man’s Island, a 1996 TV movie starring Barbara Eden. At the start of his career, he was in charge of stage lights at the Williamstown Theatre Festival; eventually, he was offered the position of Artistic Director of the acclaimed Massachusetts theatre company.

Hunt was a pioneer in the academic study of children’s literature as a literary rather than educational discipline at the university level, and ‘has been instrumental in creating a global network of people whose research concerns are located in this field.’ The courses he ran in Cardiff in 1985 were the first of their kind in the United Kingdom. He has lectured on children’s literature at more than 150 universities, colleges, and learning societies in 23 countries, and has been a visiting professor at Trinity College, Dublin, Università Ca’Foscari Venice, Newcastle University, and Hollins University, Roanoke VA, USA, for the past few years.

He has written or edited 26 books and more than 500 papers, reference book entries, and reviews on the subject. His books have been translated into Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Greek, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese (Brazil), and Serbian. He received the Distinguished Scholarship Award from the International Association for Fantastic Arts in 1995 and the Brothers Grimm Award for Children’s Literature in 2003 from the International Institute for Children’s Literature in Osaka.
