In 1968, he also held a position as a foreign correspondent. Jennings covered the Munich Olympics massacre of Israeli athletes by Black September in 1972, which was his first significant breaking news story.

He covered the Yom Kippur War in 1973, and the following year he worked as the chief correspondent and co-producer of the Anwar Sadat biography Sadat: Action Biography, which earned him his first of two George Foster Peabody Awards.
