Peter Johnston, Director of BBC Northern Ireland for the past 17 years, will resign. Mr. Johnston is assuming a new position as director of editorial complaints and reviews at the BBC.
In December 2021, he briefly left BBC Northern Ireland.
Mr. Johnston was selected by the corporation to manage its impartiality plan at the time; since then, Mr. Smyth has served as interim director of BBC Northern Ireland.
But, Peter Johnston is now permanently departing BBC Northern Ireland for his new position.
The corporation will now attempt to hire a permanent director for BBC Northern Ireland.
The BBC’s director of Nations, Rhodri Talfan Davies, stated that Mr. Johnston had performed “great work in Northern Ireland for so many years.”
He also praised Mr. Johnston’s “editorial judgment and broadcasting enthusiasm.”
