A woman was allegedly abused by Newton. During his arraignment, the Addison County sheriff denied his intention to resign. Newton pleads not guilty to each of the four charges. There are two cases reported of sexual assault, illegal restraint, and domestic violence.
Newton may receive life in prison for these charges. According to the victim, Newton acted “above everyone” because he was the sheriff. According to a 10-page complaint, the victim dreaded coming forward due to Newton’s high-ranking law enforcement position.

In February, Newton was detained for “domestic disturbance.” A citizen of Middlebury, Vermont reported the incident. A spokesperson for the Vermont State Police stated that the department initiated an investigation and arrested Newton on June 28.
Since his arrest, the calls for his resignation have increased. During the hearing, Jason Sawyer, the attorney for Peter Newton, stated that the sheriff was “properly elected” and would gladly execute administrative duties.
Reportedly, Newton stated that he will not run for re-election and that his “great character” is being damaged.
An affidavit filed against him referenced a YouTube video he made following an investigation. Newton stated that he was suicidal but was “great at putting up a good front.” Newton has been writing on Facebook about his contracting company, which he intends to operate after 2023.
According to the victim, Newton is a predator
In May 2021, the accuser called Newton for assistance with an abusive boyfriend. Newton allegedly assured her and her children of his protection.
Over time, the accused sheriff attempted to control the woman by offering her alcoholic beverages. VTdigger claimed he would then engage in sexual activity with her while she was unconscious.
The lady commented on his behavior and her apprehension:
“He has weapons. Predator. This individual abuses authority. The whole sheriff’s office is aware that he used his position to solicit women. They comprehended.”
WPTZ reported that Peter Newton is out on a $100,000 bail and unable to do his duties. Additionally, the 50-year-old must maintain a 300-foot distance from the claimed victim. He can only hold the position in Vermont.
