After a battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Peter Reith, a former Howard government minister and advocate for labor relations reform, died away at the age of 72.

A family spokeswoman said on Tuesday night that Reith “passed peacefully” earlier on Tuesday afternoon.

Reith’s former ministerial assistant, Ian Hanke, issued the following statement: “It is with deep sadness that we confirm that after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s illness Peter Reith died peacefully in the afternoon of November 8, 2022.”

Mr. Reith served as a cabinet member under John Hewson, Alexander Downer, Andrew Peacock, and John Howard throughout his 17 years in service.

John Howard, a former prime minister, paid homage to his “close buddy.” Mr. Howard said that “the Liberal Party has lost a persistent champion of what it believes in.”

He was crucial to the accomplishment of the Howard administration’s policies. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his wife Kerrie, his four sons, and their families.

Former Mr. Reith press secretary Ian Hanke also spoke on behalf of the Reith family. It was confirmed in the announcement that Peter Reith passed away peacefully on November 8, 2022, in the afternoon, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

“We are proud of his numerous achievements and his lifelong commitment to public service.A beloved father, grandpa, husband, brother, friend, and respected employee. He will always be loved and sadly lost.

Did Australia’s former defense minister pass away due to health problems?

Yes, Peter Reith passed away due to a medical condition. After a struggle with Alzheimer’s, the former Liberal Party deputy leader passed away.

John Howard’s minister for small business, military, and labor and employment relations was Mr. Reith, a former Flinders member. He held the position of Deputy Leader of the Party from April 1990 until March 1993.

According to his family, he softly passed away on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Reith, whom Mr. Howard lauded, was known as a “great warrior for the Liberal cause.”

According to Mr. Howard, among other things, he was in charge of revamping the Australian Waterfront.

Regardless matter how controversial the 1998 Waterfront Dispute settlement may have been, it was apparent that destructive conduct, which seriously hurt some of Australia’s most productive businesses, was replaced with productivity on par with the rest of the globe.

The opposition leader, Peter Dutton, said Mr. Reith’s “political legacy is considerable.”

But according to Mr. Dutton, “He will be remembered most for his boldness in the face of extreme union intimidation, particularly by freeing up the waterfront to ensure Australia had a more productive, forward-looking economy.”

He played a significant role in creating significant workplace reform that gave the interests of both employers and workers first priority.
