Pipit Rismanto Discovers Trader Forged Ingredient Label
Police said a local dealer marketed pharmaceutical-grade chemicals as industrial-grade chemicals, which were used in medical syrups that may have killed over 200 children nationwide.
Several syrup-based paracetamol medications included ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG), which authorities blamed for many of the children’s severe renal damage. Two compounds are a cheaper option for glycerine, a solvent or thickener in many cough syrups and pharmaceuticals. Antifreeze, braking fluids, and other industrial uses use them. Poisonous and acute kidney injuries are possible.
Yesterday, senior police official Pipit Rismanto revealed that CV Samudera Chemical was selling “industrial-grade” EG and DEG as Dow Chemical Thailand pharmaceutical-grade propylene glycol to regional medication distributors.
Samudera and CV Anugrah Perdana Gemilang distributors were arrested and prosecuted. Pipit said other suspects may be identified as the investigation continues.
Reuters was unable to contact CV Samudera Chemical or its distributor for comment. The company is “committed to working with the government, distributors, and industry partners to do our part in mitigating the pervasive and urgent issue of counterfeiting and tackling this industry-wide problem with all stakeholders,” says Dow Indonesia president director Riswan Sipayung.
