He eventually attended the Colombian cadet school of the national police of the Colombian national army but left because he was dissatisfied. After quitting the police force, he joined the Colombian Navy, where he got the moniker Popeye. He was given the moniker due to his likeness to American cartoon characters.
Popeye, on the other hand, didn’t feel at home at Marine and soon decided to join the Mafia full-time. Before meeting drug lord Pablo Escobar, he worked for a childhood friend. He also began killing people when he was 18 years old when he killed a bus driver who had unintentionally killed his friend’s mother. Popeye once dated Wendy Chavarriaga Gil, a former lover of his boss Manuela Escobar’s father, Pablo Escobar. Despite his feelings for her, he killed her with his own hand since he worked in the criminal underworld. When he was in bed with Wendy at one point, the phone rang, and on the other end was a recording of her chatting with DEA officers. It was a major challenge to provide information to US authorities regarding everything related to the gang. Nonetheless, the scenario devolved into chaos when Popeye’s employer Pablo gave him orders to kill her.
He eventually shot her twice in the forehead when Pablo gave him the alternative of “love or death, money or lead.” He quickly hung up the phone and shot her, despite the fact that she was the woman he loved. Apart from that, he may have been in a relationship with some ladies, but because his life was not conducive to being in a relationship, he remained unmarried his entire life. He stated that he did enjoy his relationships with several women, but only sexually.

Popeye died on February 6, 2020, in Bogota Cundinamarca, Colombia, of natural causes. At the age of 57, he died at a Bogota hospital from stomach cancer. Prior to his death, he had been re-incarcerated in 2018 after being freed in 2014, having served an initial 23-year sentence after turning himself in in 1992.
Furthermore, he claimed to kill over 300 individuals on his own throughout his reign as a hitman. Despite this, he was a popular figure among Colombians due to his outspoken opposition to the Colombian government and President Trump.
