He was lauded for his dedication to education, especially when it came to painting and expressing creativity. He was frequently the quiet one in the group, yet he would go on to become an educator for the Turtle Island Preserve, serving on the board of directors with his close friend.

Roberts learned about the Turtle Island Preserve from Eustace Conway, who initially settled on the area before claiming ownership. The 1,000-acre preserve is located in Boone, North Carolina. The location rose to prominence after it was featured in the show “Mountain Men,” which depicted the couple doing tasks around the reserve and preparing food to endure the winter. The reserve has been under inspection multiple times, the most recent being for a breach of building codes, which resulted in a temporary closure.
It was then exempted from building codes due to the primitive nature of the structures, and things ultimately resumed contact with nature.

Eustace also voiced his anguish over the death of a close friend, calling the emotion of loss inexplicable. The cast of “Mountain Men” also offered their condolences, while many fans and stars voiced their regret at the loss of one of the show’s favorite characters.
A year after his death, the production firm behind “Mountain Men” established a scholarship in his honor to benefit Wilkes County kids. It was a huge honor for his family because many people knew he spent a significant portion of his life educating and assisting youngsters in his community.
